sacred201.jpg

Check it out, GamesRadar has just posted a whopping 13 new screenshots from the up and coming Action-RPG Sacred 2. For those that don’t remember, or even know, what Sacred is; it was a isometric action RPG released on the PC a few years back. This is the game’s first foray into the 3D realm, and promises multiple branches of magic to invest in as well as a whopping 650 quests.

ReMix: Star Wars Galaxies!

swgalaxiestotalex_pcboxboxart_160w.jpg

So I read a lot of forums. Big surprise right? Anyways more than a few of these happen to have to do with video games. Mostly PC games because. . . well if its not obvious to you then perhaps you are in the wrong place. Anyways I read a lot about videogames and the player opinions thereof. I must say the most controversial game, at least MMO-game, has got to be the Star Wars Galaxies MMORPG.

The Star Wars Galaxy game was released a few years back, 2003 I think. It was released with much fanfare and all the jazz that usually surrounds the launch of something Star Wars. In fact, this one may have even been more anticipated simply because now you could actually live in the universe that everybody seems to love so much. I, unfortunately, never played this version of the game.

You see, back when the game launched is was very much a “sandbox” type game. You had no real quests, and there wasn’t really a story line. Also the game was, as far as I know, completely class-less. You started the game as some random shlub who wasn’t at all special. From there you worked on your skills, or professions, such as being a bounty hunter, medic, trader, etc. You could master these professions and move on to the next, which I am assuming mastering one of them was extremely hard. Eventually, patience and time provided, you could master nearly every profession in the game which encompassed nearly everything you could imagine within the Star Wars universe. It was then that people began realizing there was a hidden profession within the game, the Jedi.

Gear: ATI Radeon HD2000 Series!

radeon2900_embed001.jpgSmell that? Thats the smell of brand new electronics. Smells good, doesn’t it? Funny thing is that the more powerful the electronics get the better it smells.  In particular the new ATI DX10 compatible HD2000 series (more specifically the 2900, 2600, and 2400) are smelling absolutely delicious right now.

GameSpot recently got their hands on the whole series of 2900, 2600 and 2400 video cards, and luckily for us, they came away pretty impressed with the enitre lot. The new HD 2900 card seems to be more powerful than even NVidia’s GeForce 8800 GT card, which is pretty impressive. However, as with all of these high-end video cards, they come with a price. Check out the full specs below:

Radeon HD 2900 XT Radeon HD 2600 XT Radeon HD 2600 Pro Radeon HD 2400 XT Radeon HD 2400 Pro

Supreme Comander: Forged Alliance Xpac

supremecom01.jpg

Gas Powered Games, the original creators of Supreme Commander, have revealed their next expansion for their surprisingly good Supreme Commander. For that that don’t know what Supreme Commander was, it was a massive RTS game with three factions and hundreds of units. It was an intense, and very difficult, experience.

The expansion pack will be a standalone game. Its not officially a sequel but its not really just an expansion. If you don’t have the original, you can still play the game with this xpac. The xpac is also planning on offering over 100 additional units, a hellofalot more missions, revamped multiplayer, and an entirely new faction. Sounds like yet another expansion pack will be offering more than the Starcraft sequel.

Free-2-Play: Upshift Racing MMO

upshift-strikeracer01.jpgYou know what’s crappy about MMOs? The $10-$15 you’ll be paying each month consecutively after that initial $50 purchase until you manage to break your addiction to the game. One could argue that an MMO is actually cheaper given the comparison between how much content is typically in an MMO and that of a single-player only game. Its a valid argument, afterall. Typically you get MUCH more content in your average MMO than in even the most diehard singleplayer games. For example, I logged in about 100 hours on my Elder Scrolls: Oblivion game where as I could very very easily log in about 15 days (straight) of World of Warcraft time. That is just one of the reasons why we are forced to pay.

Luckily for the cheapskate in all of us, there are Free2Play MMO games out there. Today’s such game is Upshift Strikeracer, a racing/car combat MMO. The game is being designed for those racing-nuts out there who love to race, but also wish to have the ability to destroy other racers as well. Each car will have the option of equipping 3 different weapons on them; a rear weapon for shooting behind you, a front weapon for close range assault, and a long range weapon such as mortars and missles.

In addition to the weapons and racing aspect of the game, you can also buy (with real money) little extras to make your car look unique. I know it sounds a bit like a scam, but this is how these Free2Play MMOs make their money. Microtransactions are common place in games like this, however, if you can resist the urge to be “different” you’ll get away with playing what looks like a simple yet fun racer for absolutely nothing. Check out this game when it releases this August.

What Could Have Been: Star Trek Borg Assimilator

borg.jpg

Sorry it has taken me so long to do another one of these. I know how you all love to know what great PC games you missed out on because of this reason or that reason. This week I bring you a little known title from the Star Trek universe. So get ready to nurture your inner-geek because this week I present to you Star Trek: Borg Assimilator.

Back in 2000-ish Activision secured the rights from Paramount/Viacom to make a game based on the Star Trek universe. Not just Star Trek but they received the rights to make a game based on the Borg from Star Trek. The game was initially put on hold in 2001/2002 due to Star Trek story-line inconsistencies. It has not yet been brough back into development, and although nothing specific was ever said about it being completely cancelled the chances of Activision revisiting this product are slim, very slim.

For those that don’t know what the Borg were, they were a race of cyborgs (go figure huh?) that was out to “assimilate” humans into their own race. Needless to say they were the main “bad guys” in the show.

Well that concludes our cancelled game of the week.  The game was very very early in development and I couldn’t find a screenshot of the actual game.

Universe at War goes Windows Live!

universeatwar01.jpg

Remember when I previewed this game way back almost a month ago? (If not you can check it out HERE) The game promises to be a fast paced RTS with 4 completely different factions to play with. Sounds fun right? Well how much more fun would it be if you could play with your fellow Xbox 360 players as well? Thats right. Sega, publisher of this game, has announced that when this game launches on PC (this holiday) and the Xbox 360(early next year) it will be launched under Microsoft’s infamous Windows Live! service.

Now I am not entirely sure how this will play out. With the promise of Windows Live, chances are that the game will only be on Windows Vista. However, I don’t see Sega losing out on all that money from XP users especially since Sega has nothing to gain by promoting this system like Microsoft did with ShadowRun. Perhaps Sega is developing a method by which their games can use Windows Live but on XP? Over Microsoft’s dead rotting body. . .

Then there is another issue with this type of move for an RTS. Console controls are vastly inferior to that of a PC RTS. Is there a way to rectify this problem? Petroglyph, the developer, seems to think so. They tell IGN they are building the control system from the ground up for the console and that they will be using ideas from Command & Conquer 3 as well as Battle for Middle Earth II, both Xbox 360 RTS games. Here’s hoping that these problems get solved, its not a job I’d want to be tasked with.

PhysX Enabled Games: Is it Worth It?

For those that don’t know what a PhysX card is, it is basically a direct-connect (to your motherboard) PCI-card. It handles all of the physics that would normally take place in a game. Everything you do requires physics, even in a videogame. That feature is now provided for with its own exclusive card.

So the guys over at GamesRadar brought up an interesting point: why do we need a PhysX cards to start running with our games? Its a good question to ask because quite frankly the physics in all my games seem to be working as intended. I shoot at something, it flies back as I would expect in the real world (or as close to it as possible). Well apparently my perception of whats real differs from what a PhysX card can do. Not only does a PhysX card make the physics in a game that much better but it also relieves stress off your already overloaded CPU and GPU which currently handle it all right now. The video above highlights exactly what a PhysX engine can do. Keep in mind that although the changes may be slight, when you are actually playing a game using PhysX you’ll notice a considerable difference as the interaction between you and the objects gets intensified.

Just a note: we are not owned/operated/or have anything to do with GamesRadar. I use their website as a news reference a lot basically because I, honestly, think they are the best, at least as far as PC gaming goes. They are accurate, fast, and to the point. I do have a free membership with their website, but thats as far as our relationship goes. Just a note for anybody wondering why I seem to shill GamesRadar so much.

Rumour: Soldier of Fortune Sequel in the Works

soldieroffortune.bmp

Here comes PCGI hopping on the romour train along with everybody else. And who can blame us, with min-E3 just around the corner, one can only expect to be catching words and hearsay of this game and that game being made or remade. Its quite an exciting time for game journalists everywhere. I can’t wait.

On the same note, the scurvy bunch over at GamesRadar has posted a rather interesting tidbit. Let it be known that this is a rumour only. There is no facts behind this at all. Anyways, GamesRadar has posted an article stating that Activision has a sequel to their infamous Soldier of Fortune FPS series, locked and ready to launch for a November release. I personally never played this game, however, for its day it was definitely considered to be one of the more blood-filled games. It ran off a unique engine that allowed you to blow off any limb you aimed at. Pretty neat huh? I can’t wait to see what they can do with our current technology. Here is hoping the min-E3 will reveal more information on this game as to whether it exists or not.

New Starcraft Building Unveiled!

starcraft2building.jpg

Since every other PC news website has latched on to Blizzard, suckling every small bit of news that squeezes out of the developer, we at PC Gamer: Insider decided to as well. Actually thats not entirely true, we latch onto the larger news websites and get our information from them. Its a viscious chain, where we, the bloggers, win! Hooray!

In any case pictures above is the new Protoss building, courtesy of IGN. It is called a Stargate and it is basically the one “higher tiered” building that will allow you to produce the Phoenix. For those that don’t remember what the Phoenix is, it is the flying Protoss unit that uses a “power overload” energy beam weapon against other flyers. Its a pretty neat vehicle. Unfortuantely that is the one and only screenshot released for today. Saviour it Starcraft junkies, who knows how long it will be before another one lands on our laps.
