Play Spore in 6 Months?

spore001.GIF

Could it be true? Is there actually a possibility that we will be playing Spore in as early as 6 months? To be honest, I am skeptical, but that may just be because the game has been in development for roughly 8 years now and its last 5 or so release dates have been delayed. Seriously the game has to come out sometime right? Right?

In anycase, Will Wright, famed developer behind the SimCity and Spore games, has, in an interview with Radio 5 Live, annoucned that the game is in the testing phases and should be ready to go in 6 months or so. Which is you recall the game’s latest delay had already pushed it back to around Arpil of 08′ so there should really be no surprise here. Once again. . . hope for the best but expect a delay.

Savage 2 Beta Begins

savage2.jpg

You know what’s fun? FPS and RTS games. You know what’s even better than those? A combination of the two. Although very very rare, every once in a while a developer will come along with this idea. Even then only about a quarter of the titles actually make it into production, and then not many actually make it out the door after that. Its a rare breed of video game. Luckily for us we have Savage 2, a game that is very much promising that type of gameplay. One person will control the battlefield as if he were playing an RTS, while other players will be on the ground via a third person or FPS view. At the very least it sounds interesting, right?

In anycase, you can try it out today if you want. All you have to do is goto their website and pre-order the game. It really isn’t too much to ask, and a lot of developers are doing this nowadays. Best of all, since this is a self-published title, the game will only cost you $29.99, 20 dollars cheaper than what you’d expect to pay for a title such as this!

DELAYED: Universe at War: Earth Assault

univers-at-war.jpg

So remember when I was saying a while back about how it is ok if a few games get delayed because we have so many AAA titles coming anyways for this holiday season? Well I am starting to change my mind. If more games keep getting the boot to 2008 we will be stuck with another mediocre holiday line up for our PC.

The latest victim? Universe at War: Earth Assault. The game seems to have almost been bred simply to give RTS fanatics something to play while they wait for Starcraft 2 (no matter how mediocre it looks). Personally, I am wanting to play UaW even more. If it is any conciliation, however, at least the PC version should be shipping with, or near, the Xbox 360 version, and as a Games for Windows Live partner this will mean we will get to play with them that much sooner. Silver lining my friend. . .

New Starcraft 2 Units!

starcraft2protoss001.jpg

Ignore the picture above, it’s old news units from the Protoss faction in Starcraft 2. The real news is what lies below. Hidden, deep within the confines of a Swedish gaming magazine are brand new Starcraft 2 Terran units.  For those that don’t know, Blizzard has not yet decided to showcase most of the new Terran units and all but one new Zerg unit.

Although these may be fake, as a Swedish gaming magazine isn’t the most reliable source of information, they do look and feel authentic. Personally I am looking forward to trying out the transformer-type unit. Should be an interesting style of play. Screenies below.

P.S. Can anybody read Swedish?

World in Conflict: Beta!

worldinconflict01.jpg

I just got into the beta for this game last night and let me tell you, the game is amazingly fun. Of course its only the multiplayer beta, but thats why it is so special. You see, I don’t like multiplayer RTS games. I just don’t. Ever since Starcraft I have hated it. I do not like building up a horde of one type opf guy and bum-rushing the enemy, it is very bring for me. However, this game is completely different. If anything I’d say this RTS game plays more like an FPS multiplayer game than Starcraft.

When you first log on to your account you’ll select which server (it will look very much like counterstrike’s server list). It shows you which servers are empty and which have people in them. Once you select a server you’ll be thrust into the game, usually which was going on before you jumped in. From here you’ll select which “class” you will command:

  • Armoured - Heavy, medium, light tanks.
  • Flight - Mostly helicopters.
  • Support - Anti-air vehicles and artillery cannons.
  • Infantry - Regular infantry, demolition crew, sniper, troop transport, anti-tank infantry.

After you choose one of those you’ll be able to “requisition” those type of units. From there you lead them into battle in order to secure hotspots around the (often huge) map. The game is fast paced, and action oriented. There is very little, if any, downtime. The game released this September. Any fan of RTS games should definitely check this gem out. Video below.

E3-ish: New Spore Update

spore01.jpg

While the game is not actually being shown at E3 this year, there has been an update in how the game is coming along. Thanks to IGN, who got an interview, we have found out a few new juicy details as well as 3 new screenies and a new video!

So apparently the game is in alpha right now. What does that mean? When a game is in alpha it means that it is largely completed, not completed as in ready to ship, but completed as in you can play through most of the aspects of the game. Apparently, Maxis has been bringing in gamers to actually play the game for hours at a time, monitoring them and asking them what they like or dislike about the game so they can change it where it’s required.

Another new morsel of news is that Spore will be making a rather large appearence at this year’s Leipzig Video Game convention in Germany. Hopefully form there we will get a final release date, or another notice that the date has been pushed back. Screenies below:

Universe at War New Details!

uaw01.jpgSo I am beginning to report on this RTS more and more and, quite frankly, it’s because the game is starting to sound better and better (Read up on my other UaW articles HERE and HERE).

As you may already know, the game is being built for the Games for Windows Live platform so console and PC users can fight against eachother. There were a lot of issues in the air when Sega first announced this, primarily that being PC controls are much more accurate for an RTS game. Well Sega has recently informed IGN that their first console player has just beaten a PC player which could only mean one thing: the console controls are working.

The other issue that you may be wondering about is: will the game work on Windows XP? Its a good question to ask, because obviously ShadowRun used the same system and was doomed to exclusivity on Vista which some say (me) is the reason why sales were so low for the game. Well I have some good news for all who were wondering, the game WILL run on Windows XP and it WILL NOT require Windows Live! service to play against other PC owners. It will remain free. Good job Sega. Fresh screenies below.

Supreme Comander: Forged Alliance Xpac

supremecom01.jpg

Gas Powered Games, the original creators of Supreme Commander, have revealed their next expansion for their surprisingly good Supreme Commander. For that that don’t know what Supreme Commander was, it was a massive RTS game with three factions and hundreds of units. It was an intense, and very difficult, experience.

The expansion pack will be a standalone game. Its not officially a sequel but its not really just an expansion. If you don’t have the original, you can still play the game with this xpac. The xpac is also planning on offering over 100 additional units, a hellofalot more missions, revamped multiplayer, and an entirely new faction. Sounds like yet another expansion pack will be offering more than the Starcraft sequel.

Universe at War goes Windows Live!

universeatwar01.jpg

Remember when I previewed this game way back almost a month ago? (If not you can check it out HERE) The game promises to be a fast paced RTS with 4 completely different factions to play with. Sounds fun right? Well how much more fun would it be if you could play with your fellow Xbox 360 players as well? Thats right. Sega, publisher of this game, has announced that when this game launches on PC (this holiday) and the Xbox 360(early next year) it will be launched under Microsoft’s infamous Windows Live! service.

Now I am not entirely sure how this will play out. With the promise of Windows Live, chances are that the game will only be on Windows Vista. However, I don’t see Sega losing out on all that money from XP users especially since Sega has nothing to gain by promoting this system like Microsoft did with ShadowRun. Perhaps Sega is developing a method by which their games can use Windows Live but on XP? Over Microsoft’s dead rotting body. . .

Then there is another issue with this type of move for an RTS. Console controls are vastly inferior to that of a PC RTS. Is there a way to rectify this problem? Petroglyph, the developer, seems to think so. They tell IGN they are building the control system from the ground up for the console and that they will be using ideas from Command & Conquer 3 as well as Battle for Middle Earth II, both Xbox 360 RTS games. Here’s hoping that these problems get solved, its not a job I’d want to be tasked with.
